IDENTITY / INCIDENT IN A GHOSTLAND: Stranger Than Reality
**SPOILERS AHEAD** How many times has this happened to you: You pull up to a motel, or visit your mother after publishing your latest best-seller. Then some raving lunatic comes along, while you’re just minding your own business, and tries to convince you that everything you’ve experienced is a fabrication, a mechanism for coping with the terrible tragedy you experienced as a child. Do you break from reality, live in your comfortable fiction, or do you march forward and brave the truth? While Rob plans his wedding, David and Devin dissect James Mangold’s IDENTITY (2003) and Pascal Laugier’s INCIDENT IN A GHOSTLAND (2018) (also known simply as GHOSTLAND). We’re talking plot twists, Dissociative Identity Disorder, exploitation, and great performances all around. (R.I.P. HEREDITARY / PET SEMETARY (1989): Grief and Belief
There’s no wrong way to grieve, but there certainly is an unhealthy way. Say… calling on the power of demons/unknown cosmic forces to bring the dead back to life only to have them go on a murder spree. That’s pretty unhealthy, don’t you think? The Cadaver Dogs take a trip to the afterlife in this episode as they walk through the many examples of grief in two horror film staples. First up is the original Ari Aster movie HEREDITARY (starring Toni Colette, Gabriel Byrne, Milly Shapiro, Alex Wolff, and indie film bae Ann Dowd.) We tackle the origins of the demon Paimon, voyeurism through filmmaking, misconceived spiritualism, and the concept of tragedy. Then, we take a not so big leap to Mary Lambert’s PET SEMETARY (1989) adapted from Stephen King’s novel. The dogs offer a fresh perspective on industrialism, gender representation of yore, Native American burial ground tropes, and just how much parents royally f*** up. Oh, and nominate Toni Collette, you cowards. . Up Next: IDENTITY (2003) /  INCIDENT IN A GHOSTLAND (2018) . Next Month (May): Grief and Belief
Announcing next month's films:  HEREDITARY (2018, dir. Ari Aster) - available for free with a Showtime subscription, or to purchase/rent pretty much anywhere. PET SEMETARY (1989, dir. Mary Lamber) - available free on Netflix and to purchase/rent anywhere. . . History has shown us that when humans mourn a loved one, they tend to turn to the paranormal to find hope in an after life. And while there's no right or wrong way to grieve, there's certainly an unhealthy way... The Dogs will explore the representations of grief in the hit horror film Hereditary and the original Stephen King adaptation of Pet Semetary. And yes, we all agree that Toni Collette should have gotten that Oscar. . Follow us at:  instagram.com/cadaverdogspod twitter.com/cadaverdogspod facebook.com/cadaverdogspod  . PLAN 9 / BIRDEMIC: Aliens and Avians
In 1938, Orson Welles directed and narrated an adaptation of “War of the Worlds” for a radio broadcast. However, listeners did not understand what they were hearing, and believed aliens were actually attacking! Panic ensued. For this very special episode of Cadaver Dogs Pod, we will be talking about something else entirely. From Ed Wood to James Nguyen, it’s time we dig into the deep social and economic commentaries of PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (1957) and BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR (2010). Though we will of course explain why the filmmaking in these works is so effective, we will primarily be exploring the heavy topics of nuclear war, climate change, and the terrifying existential question: What if humanity IS the virus? BLACK ROSES / WE SUMMON THE DARKNESS: Metalsploitation
The 80s were more than just sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll… but let’s be honest, it was mostly that.. Rob and Devin are joined by guest Chris Guzzo (Pod From the Crypt) to talk metal-sploitation horror. (David is off directing a horror movie - send him some love!) In this episode, we dive into how both these films embrace the anti-establishment principle of horror movies and metal music. For BLACK ROSES, a Troma release, we discuss generational hypocrisy and the music censorship movement led by Tipper Gore - as well as the killer special effects and creature design. For WE SUMMON THE DARKNESS, starring Alexandra Daddario,Johnny Knoxville, and Taylor Swift’s brother, we discuss the satanic panic, TV evangelists, and rebelling against “the man”. We also touch on the use of nudity in these films… quite a bit. (Also, congratulate us! We did an 80s episode without mentioning Reagan for once!) . Metal music is making our children murderers! Horror movies and heavy metal found a way to fight back against parental censorship in the 1980s. With inspiration from the satanic panic and 80s counter culture, metalsploitation movies were created. Next week, the Cadaver Dogs take analyze two films that hit this topic dead on. NIGHTCRAWLER / THE NIGHT FLIER: Tabloids of Terror
“Never believe what you publish, and never publish what you believe.” These are the words of wisdom echoed by tabloid journalists everywhere… and maybe even by “legitimate” reporters? In an age where fake news persists, by what skewered code does the media abide? What lines will journalists cross, and who might they hurt in the process? We’re talking bloodsuckers, airplanes, and the National Inquirer in our first movie THE NIGHT FLIER (1997), a Stephen King adaptation in which Miguel Ferrer finds himself hot on the trail of a serial killer / vampire pilot. Then we jump ahead to Dan Gilroy’s Oscar-nominated NIGHTCRAWLER (2014), where Jake Gyllenhaal plays a sociopath keenly manipulating the staff of a failing local news network, also starring Rene Russo, Riz Ahmed, and Bill Paxton. THE INVITATION/ THE SACRAMENT: Cults
Don't Drink That! Drop you glasses of Flavor Aid, leave your family, and stop listening to that raving mad man trying to save your soul! The Cadaver Dogs are your new community. Join the pack as we dig up some historically inspired cult films.   Jim Jones and The People's Temple inspired this Ti West film, THE SACRAMENT, which changes only a few key details.  Not for the faint of heart, nobody is safe in this found footage gore fest lead by a crew of Vice journalists looking for a crew member's sister in a "remote part of the world." Is the mysterious leader known as "Father" to be trusted? Leaving the jungle and going to dinner with the ex, we light some red lanterns in THE INVITATION, a heavy exploration of grief and, you guessed it, a strange community who likes to watch people die.  What draws people to these groups? What is a cult? And do the Dogs have the answers?    CONTENT WARNING: Potentially disturbing themes such as suicide are discussed. DAGON / NIGHTMARE CITY: Schlock-tastic Voyage
Bad acting. Bad scripts. INCREDIBLE effects. The Cadaver Dogs take a schlock-tastic voyage during their analysis of two international cult classics. What makes these movies so bad they’re good? Or, so bad they’re… well, bad?  By stripping down to the bare bones of Stuart Gordan’s DAGON (2001) and Umberto Lenzi’s NIGHTMARE CITY (1980), you see the necessities of a horror film. The Dogs analyze the creature design, film direction (what an odd approach to dubbing), and fear tactics that have made these films “guilty pleasures” for horror fans. During their dive into Dagon, an adaptation of The Shadow Over Innsmouth by H.P. Lovecraft, they talk xenophobia and fear of the other. While Nightmare City makes them question the boundaries of exploitation films and if action horror should be a considerable genre. . Up Next: THE INVITATION (2015)  / THE SACRAMENT (2013) . AUDITION / FRANKENHOOKER: The Perfect Woman
Want a date? But with whom? What are the ideals and standards of perfection that men hold women to in modern society? The Cadaver Dogs are pulling back the curtains on the unrealistic expectations we hold in relationships, and the destructive – sometimes explosive – consequences. There have been many interpretations of Takashi Miike’s AUDITION (1999) over the years, and oh boy do we have thoughts! On the total opposite of the spectrum lies FRANKENHOOKER (1990), the title and plot of which writer-director Frank Henenlotter improvised during a pitch meeting. But the Dogs will also seek to answer: Are these movies truly sexist, or are they secretly feminist? Or neither?
