Prescription Denied - EPISODE ONE: S’s Story

Getting a medication abortion in the U.S. is a race against the clock - that's because the drug can only be prescribed in the first 10 weeks of a pregnancy. We follow one woman's journey across three states as she tries to find a clinic that can give her the pills. The drug is considered so dangerous you can't pick up the medication in a pharmacy with a prescription - you can only get it from a certified provider. We expose how safety appears to have little to do with how this drug is regulated.

It has a better safety record than penicillin and Viagra, yet unlike those medications, you can't get the abortion pill at a pharmacy with a prescription. That's because for 20 years , the Food and Drug Administration has imposed tighter restrictions on the abortion pill than on some opioids. And all of this poses a burden on women - particularly those in rural and medically underserved areas.
