A Broken Trust - EPISODE THREE

Judge Stacie Fourstar wants to break the cycle of sexual violence on her reservation. But tribal courts face major restrictions, including a one-year limit on sentences regardless of the crime. The U.S. attorney’s office doesn’t have that limit and could prosecute these cases, but it declines most of them. So Judge Fourstar left her young daughters in order to attend law school to meet the federal requirements and give her more authority.

A harrowing deep dive into the racial group most likely to be raped in the US - American Indian and Alaska Native women. Our investigation uncovers how race, politics and the law have prevented these survivors from finding justice.
